Martin Kool: Game Developer Gives 7-Year-Old Best... →
mrtnkl:
Being a gaming father I try to raise my kids with a healthy balance of analog and digital fun. To the surprise of me and Mrs Kool they don’t seem to care about digital games that much, and prefer paper, glue and scissors and playing outside over anything else.
But recently my son Zias discovered

Stuff to Learn in 2012
I’m making a list of stuff I really want to learn in 2012, language wise. Obviously my main focus will be to become a better Ruby programmer and to expand my knowledge of Rails (My day job is a Ruby gig, Mealcloud). Everyday I look at my Twitter feed I see dozens of cool new languages and frameworks that have been released and I never seem to make the time to check them out. So, heres my...

Ryan Bigg - Game of Life Live Coding
This is an awesome live coding video from Ryan Bigg of Ruby Hero fame. I find watching people code is the best way to learn. Not only do you pick up little bits of new info, but you also get an insight into how others solve problems. Enjoy!

Gowalla: Gowalla is Going to Facebook →
gowalla:
Three years ago Gowalla’s journey began when I took a photograph of Lake Tahoe on my iPhone. I had just finished a phone call with my dad, and I wanted nothing more than to share that photo and place with him. Not just in a text message or status update sort of way, but with a bit of weight…

Good Design Sells
I have been pondering this topic for a while now, but I decided I must post about it when I read a link posted this morning by Jeffrey Zeldman.
It is becoming more and more apparent that when it comes to startups, design is selling BIG. Just look at Gowalla. They have a great design team (I know it includes Tim Van Damme), and have just been purchased by Facebook to help improve their Timeline...

Nginx Setup Script →
While setting up our server, I noticed that apt-get doesn’t seem to support Nginx anymore, or at least, there are some problems with it right now. Being the programmer that I am, finding and compiling a whole bunch of dependencies didn’t really appeal to me. Luckily I found this script by Mike Mansell that automatically installs Nginx and all of it’s dependencies. Thanks Mike,...

Riding Shotgun with Sinatra →
I’m currently learning Sinatra and discovered that every time I make a change to an app, I would have to manually restart my Sinatra server. Obviously, this can become quite tedious, especially when only making tiny changes to an app at a time. I discovered Shotgun the other day, and its safe to say that its awesome! It sits between Sinatra and Rack, and ‘reloads’ your app on...

New Look, New Start
Gave the old blog a little dust down in preperation for me using Tumblr as a platform again. We have some exciting projects coming up that I’ll write about on here and I also hope to do a lot more writing on coding technologies. Most probably I’ll focus on topics surrounding Ruby and the Rails framework, as for now that is my main love. Here’s to a great end to the year!
Jumping Ship: My move from PC to Mac
So, after a year or two of being a reluctant PC user, I have finally made the switch to Mac, and to be honest, I’m kicking myself for not doing it sooner. To me the most amazing this about OS X is that it juts works as it should. As silly as this may sound to you Mac veterans, half the time Windows juts doesn’t do what needs to be done, which is most obvious while trying to develop...

Interview Series Part 1: Jon Yongfook Cockle
I recently decided to start an interview series, focusing on web designers, developers and those who run successful online businesses. The goal of this series was to give an insight into what it takes to be successful in the web application industry and get advice from those who really know what they’re talking about.
First up is Tokyo based Web Producer, Jon Yongfook Cockle,...

Building websites is an addiction.
Having recently read 37Signals’ great new book, ReWork, one of the essays in it that stood out for me was on titled Go to Sleep. As you can probably guess it’s about sleeping well while working on a startup/website. When reading this essay, pre-SocialKloud, I thought to myself; “Surely this is a no-brainer, obviously I’m going to sleep.” How wrong I was. About...

Shortly after Pownce closed it’s doors in December of 2008, a former Pownce member named Joel (!mathamoz) opened up a replacement site entitled Topixz for all Pownce refugees. As the community was slowly building, Joel was forced to change the name of the social network to SocialKloud…

Thoughts on the Future
Well folks, in a few short weeks I’ll turn 19 and be completely over the fence into adulthood. I’m moving out in the late Summer and will be living myself in Glasgow, kinda the country boy in the big city.
The past 18 years have been a blast and I have big plans for the future. Some of my goals for before I’m 25 are:
Graduate from University
Visit Japan
Visit New York

Out on the bikes..
Inspired by Yongfook’s Facebook pictures regarding his recent hiking adventures I decide it was time again, to dust off the old bike and head out for a spin, just to get loosened off in time for the Summer :) Here are some pics (apologies for the crap quality, I had to use my phone until my GorillaPod for my SLR comes :P)
Across the Great Divide.
As an avid Wordpress user for a few years now, I’ve decided to switch to Tumblr. While I enjoy the freedom and customization options available to me on WordPress, It’s just one more thing I need to worry about on my webserver. Outsourcing is a concept that quite appeals to me, so shifting over to Tumblr makes sense. Besides, it looks way better.
